Cheerleading has traditionally been viewed as a female-dominated sport. However the male members of Phoenix Stars Cheerleading are changing this perception. When asked if people expect certain sports to be better suited for one gender over another one of the male athletes at Phoenix responded,
“Yes sports like Gymnastics, Ice-Skating, Dance etc are stereotypically more feminine and are not seen as being for males but this is changing rapidly especially when you see the success of male gymnast Max Whitlock“

Facing Pressure and Stereotypes
Despite their success, the male cheerleaders often face unique pressures. A male member of the cheer team has shared his experience about whether he has faced pressure or stereotypes within cheer with us.
“Not really because the team I got introduced to cheer in was is so inclusive that the main focus is about having fun and not about who you are as a person”

Do you feel like you have to work harder in cheerleading due to stereotypes?
“Yes, but I think where I started on a masters level 1 team and then placed into a level 5 team I felt I had to work harder to prove myself especially being on a team where everyone else is female and have been doing level 5 for multiple years”

“Knowledge and helping each other helps enhance the sport because you are able to help each other become a better cheerleader. this helps to improve morale on the team because you can see each other grow and become more confident which shows when performing and competing “
